Don't Forget the Garage!

messy garage    In the Richmond area, there are many homes which do not have garages.  And those that do have garages, end up becoming a storage area and not an area where cars are parked.  Many times this is because most Richmond homes do not have basements, so the garages end up replacing the basement area.  So when you are looking at all the rooms in your home and deciding how to stage your home to sell, do not forget the garage – it is another room in your home and buyers will look at it!  This home should be staged to impress as well as every other room in your home!

Looking at the picture, there are lots of things the seller can do to make this room that can be staged to impress as well – here are my top 10 ways to put this room in show condition!

  • First, go through the garage and declutter!  Here you will find lots of bottles & cans that are half full & may or may not be in use right now!  If a can is half full and the season for it’s use has passed, then get rid of it so that it does not continue to take up space!

  • Second, buy some shelving to put those yard items which are still in use or need to be stored!  Right now you will see items are just piled up all over the place!  So buying some plastic shelving and then neatly storing the items will help to make the garage look bigger & neater!

  • Third, buy some hooks to hang items on the wall!  There are lots of things in garages that can be stored on shelving and end up on the floor – extension cords, weed eater, garden tools, etc.  Buying and installing hooks along the wall of the garage will keep these items off the floor and make them look so much neater than they do right now!

  • Fourth, install a bike rack!  Right now bikes are on the garage floor!  Why not just buy some bike hooks and hang the bikes from the ceiling!  This will help to get the bikes off the floor and, again, make the garage look neater!

  • Fifth, store odd sized items in plastic containers!  Investing in some plastic containers to hold like items will help to give this garage an organized look to it!  The plastic containers could be stored on the new shelves that you have purchased!

  • Sixth, set the workbench as a workbench!  In looking at the picture, you can barely see the workbench that appears to be there!  Remove the items that are piled on top of the workbench, organize the tools and the power tools and make it look like a workbench!  Remember this is one of the areas that will appeal to many men!

  • Seventh, put the yard furniture out in the yard!  The cushions are piled up and take up room in the garage!  Moving them out of the garage will go a long way towards making the garage look more spacious and less cluttered!

  • Eighth, get rid of odd sizes of wood!  Why keep left over pieces of wood?  Storing these just makes the garage look cluttered!

  • Ninth, paint the floor!  If the floor of the garage is concrete, why not paint it?  That will help to make the garage feel brighter & larger!  And why not go ahead and paint the walls!  The floor of the garage needs to spic & span!

  • Tenth, add some bright lights!  You have painted the floor, painted the walls, organized everything, set up the workbench – now make it bright enough for people to see it!  Add some bright lights to show off your hard work!

Now that you have done everything to make your garage an asset for your home, don’t forget to keep it organized!

I would love to hear from you on any other suggestions you may have to help organize & stage the garage!
