Welcome To City of Richmond, VA Real Estate & General Information

The City of Richmond has much to offer people and there is a great diversity of neighborhoods as well as housing styles within the city.  Not only do you have great neighborhoods, world class museums & a performing arts venue, but you will also find a wonderful parks throughout the area:  James River Park System (along the James River on the southside), Byrd Park, Maymont, Dogwood Dell & the Carillon.  Within these parks you can find whitewater rafting, fishing, hiking, rock climbing as well as great places to just relax at the water on a hot summer’s day!

The City of Richmond can be divided into a number of different areas, each of which has it’s own architectural styles as well as it’s own unique flavor.

The Northside of the City of Richmond features neighborhoods like Ginter Park, Bellevue, Sherwood Park & Highland Park.  Architectural styles here include Victorian cottages to Georgian mansions, craftsman cottages, bungalows & American Foursquares & Colonials.  The area contains the largest collection of Queen Anne homes in the city.

The East End of the City of Richmond can be called the city’s birthplace.  It’s hilly location offers many of the homes great views of the river as well as the city skyline.  Church Hill is one of the many neighborhoods here, named for it’s many churches, the most famous being St. John’s Church where Patrick Henry gave his “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” speech!  Here you will find antebellum homes with gas lamps, brick sidewalks & neighborhood green spaces.

The Downtown area of the City of Richmond has a great mix of retail, commercial & residential spaces with many of the former industrial and office buildings being converted to apartments & condos.  Here you will find the Jackson Ward neighborhood, once known as “The Wall Street of Black America” because of it’s many banks.  The neighborhood is filled with many Greek & Georgian Revival, Queen Anne & Italianate houses, many with elaborate ironwork railings.

The Central area of the City of Richmond has neighborhoods such as “The Fan” as well as the Museum District.  Here you will find Virginia Commonwealth University as well as a great mix of restaurants, pubs, retail & a diverse mix of residences with Federal, Greek & Art Deco styles.

The West End area of the City of Richmond has a more “suburban” feel to it while still being in the City of Richmond.  This area offers river views, winding streets with mature trees & stately brick homes.  In this area you will find neighborhoods such as Windsor Farms & Westhampton.  The University of Richmond is located in this area.

The Southside area of the City of Richmond lies south of the James River within the city limits.  The Southside will have a much different feel than what you have generally found north of the James River, since much of this area was originally forests & farmlands.  Here you will find every type of community possible – from converted warehouses & storefronts to sloping lots & river views to new home neighborhoods.  Here you will also find several parks that are within the James River Park System, including Forest Hill Park and the Falling Creek Reservoir.  Neighborhoods here include Woodland Heights, Westover Hills  & Broad Rock.

The Southwest area of the City of Richmond also lies south of the James River.  Here you will find an area with a dual personality-winding streets that meander through wooded areas and alongside creeks & many areas that offer seclusion & unspoiled natural settings, as well as some of the city’s newest office, retail & residential developments.  Here you will find neighborhoods such as Stratford Hills with contemporary homes & more traditional styled homes.  Here you will also find the Pony Pasture rapids that are part of the James River Park System.
